| The action of Koei’s Dynasty Series has always seemed to be endless. The idea of Koei going portable would have fitted the picture perfectly. Koei has obviously noticed that. With Dynasty Warriors PSP out in stores, it will surely be one of the best games to get.
Dynasty Warriors PSP is based mostly on Dynasty Warriors 4 with all 42 characters. Most Koei fans are expecting a DW5 based PSP version. Not all of it is based though. Many new features have been added.
With previous Dynasty Warriors’, characters travel through maps freely, going wherever they please. In Dynasty Warriors PSP, the maps are split up into different sections. Players must clear a whole section before going to the next. A section could take up to a time-consuming 30 minutes. This new feature doesn’t fit the pick-up-and-play nature of the PSP.
Gameplay itself though, is the same with the hack-and-slash theme. The zone fighting feature works for people who play a zone, save and continue later. This method would be perfect for time-consuming zones.
The game is somewhat more strategic with commanders pulling out or coming in to help you. A minimap is shown on the screen for players to know where other officers are going.
Players must move their generals to each zone, planning their moves strategically. It is not really a one-on-one duel with a general to conquer a zone. It is more based on the morale. The opponent’s morale bar must be drained before your own is. Players must also finish their matches before their supply meter runs out. Supplies can be collected, usually in groups of 3 or 5 minutes.
The bodyguards that you earn after every level completion will not be your usual bodyguard. They will basically be second in charge and you will learn to depend on them. With health bars, the officers have different abilities. You can choose three bodyguards at a time and they have their own combos and musou powers.
With each different player you use, they have different scenarios, bodyguards and add-ons. Such add-ons are horses.
Multiplayer unfortunately isn’t in Dynasty Warriors PSP. The only task Koei has created for Wi-fi was trading characters.
