Xtreme Legends features several additions to the original game, but it also exists as a playable stand-alone product--albeit one that isn't as interesting on its own as it is when combined with the original.
Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends, just like previous Xtreme Legend games, is an expansion to original game. However, if you have played previous games, then you only have got used to new game modes, weapons and items. Well, Samurai Warriors XL offers you much more than that! The feature where you most likely first pay attention are 4 new characters in game to play as, these characters being:
Tadakatsu Honda, the powerful warrior of Mikawa, who served Ieyasu Tokugawa loyally since the beginning of his career. He crushes his enemies on battlefield with his huge tiger spear.
Hideyoshi Hashiba, a peasant who rose to Nobunaga’s favour and eventually continued his work to unify the country of Japan. His weapon is a three-sectional staff called shouki.
Yoshimoto Imagawa, the powerful daimyo of Surugu Province, who was later defeated by Nobunaga at Okehazama. He loves playing kemari, and thus, he uses a kemari ball along with katana.
Ina, the daughter of Tadakatsu Honda. She was later adopted by Ieyasu Tokugawa and married to Nobuyuki Sanada. With her bow, she fights to protect those she loves.
The 4 new characters, just like 15 others in SW also have their own unique Story mode to play as, missions to complete and movesets to use, making each one of them as interesting character to play as. There are also 2 new stages included in game, Komaki-Nagakute between Tokugawa and Toyotomi forces and Retreat at Kanegasaki between Asai-Asakura and Oda forces, which most people didn’t realize, because it had same model as Anegawa did.
If you thought that new characters are only feature that SWXL is going to offer, you are seriously wrong. The difficulty in game has also been fixed. Surely from Samurai Warriors, you remember that the better your character was, the stronger the enemies were? This might have made you wonder “What is the use of levelling up my characters?”, but now you don’t need to anymore think about that, since now the difficulty of enemies only depends from the stage and game difficulty you choose. Leveling up of your characters has also been improved in the game, allowing you to still keep making your characters even stronger and obtaining skill points despite being at Level 20 already. This certainly increases the replay value of game, if you just are a person who loves to build up characters till they are maxed out. There are also minor improvements in Skill Tree, because this time max level of normal skills is 4 instead of 3 and few completely new ones have also been added, like Gust, Buck and Chaos just to mention few. Also, each time you play any game mode in game or complete special requirements, you obtain Bonus Points, which allow you to purchase extra features from ‘Options’ menu, which can have various effects like allowing you to obtain 6th weapons on Hard instead of Chaos difficulty.
The new game modes include Gold Rush and completely new Versus mode stages. In Gold Rush mode you fight on small castle floor and you have 5 minutes time limit to collect gold. During the stage, you are given plenty of missions to complete, which can profide you more gold than usually and exceed your time limit. After you think you have collected enough gold or your time is about to end, you have to rush to the exit of castle, which is guarded by one warrior, defeat him and you have completed the challenge. Now you proceed to ‘Armory’ menu, where you can upgrade your items and weapons and rename your weapons, if you like. With this, having better items and weapons is much more easier, but can become frustrating, if you play it too much. The Versus mode has slightly been improved by adding new challenges such as Sumo, where you only play as Strike Ninjas and Gatekeeper, where you try to prevent enemies going through your gate to obtain more points and causing trouble to CPU/2nd player. If you like to have fun with your friends, then you are surely going to like from these new additions.
Another great addition to SW: Xtreme Legends is Samurai Archives, which provides you useful information from samurais, clans and battles during Sengoku period. You don’t anymore need to be confused with “Who, what and where”, since Archives gives you most of the info that you are looking for.
If you have the original Samurai Warriors, you can import it with Xtreme Legends and use your SW data to make game game even better. With this method, you are able to play Story modes of original 15 characters and obtain their 6th weapons as well, play the original Versus Mode stages, create/use your Edited Officers and play the Challenge Mode from original game.
Overall, Samurai Warriors Xtreme Legends is in my opinion the best expansion that Koei has ever made for their games. It just adds so many great features, which makes it worth of your money and time. If you thought that Samurai Warriors didn’t have everything you wanted or you still have bad taste in your mouth from Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends games, SWXL IS NOT going to be a let down for you. I can guarantee that, you will love the game.
